The idea that travel can be educational, transformational and positively influence international affairs motivated the first Global Exchange Reality Tours in 1989. Unlike traditional tourism, Reality Tours promote socially responsible travel as participants build true “people to people ties”. Reality Tours are founded on the principles of experiential education and each tour focuses on important social, economic, political and environmental issues. When you journey with Reality Tours, you will meet the people, learn the facts first hand, and then discover how people, both individually and collectively, contribute to global problems and how we can enact positive change.

Participants experience situations first-hand in places largely misunderstood by North Americans and gain a more profound version of reality than that offered to them by the common stereotypes and the mainstream media. Travelers have the chance to learn about unfamiliar cultures, meet with people from various walks of life, have fun and establish meaningful relationships with individuals and organizations from other countries.

Reality Tours focus on the human issues through direct people-to-people contact with locals from the communities we visit. Places become associated with names and faces. Realities different from our own become more relevant as they are explained by the people who live them daily. Most importantly, Reality Tours are a means to facilitate communication and understanding between people that otherwise may never meet and to take this new knowledge back home to their local communities.

All of Global Exchange’s Reality Tours are coordinated by locals working in the host communities in which they visit. The tours are directed by qualified trip facilitators and typically include two meals per day, double room accommodations, translation of all programs, reading and preparatory materials, all transportation within the country, program and entrance fees. Some trips include round-trip airfare from select US cities.

Reality Tours can also custom design a delegation for your school, church, workplace, or professional association. Reality Tours can tailor your experience to your specific needs, make all the arrangements, and all you have to do is enjoy the experience.

Global Exchange offers a wide variety of Reality Tours, but here are some summer 2006 tours that may be of interest:
